When something does not work

Every message the app can show during setup, what it means, and the one thing to do about it.

"Herdr is not reachable at ~/.config/herdr/herdr.sock"

Herdr's server is not running on the computer. Run herdr there, or check with herdr status server. See Install Herdr.

"Auth fail" or the key is refused

The key is not in ~/.ssh/authorized_keys for that user. Repeat the authorise step in Add the server, and check that ~/.ssh is mode 700 and authorized_keys is mode 600.

The connection times out

The phone cannot reach the computer. On the same network, check the computer's address has not changed (hostname -I on Linux). With Tailscale, check that both are connected (tailscale status on the computer). In both cases, check that the computer is awake and that its firewall allows SSH. On Ubuntu with Tailscale:

terminal
sudo ufw allow in on tailscale0 to any port 22

"host key changed"

Expected after a reinstall. Confirm it is your machine, then use Forget pinned host key in the server's settings.

A laptop keeps disconnecting

It is sleeping. On a Mac, open System Settings, then Battery, then Options, and prevent sleeping on the power adapter. On Linux, disable suspend while plugged in.

The phone shows the panes but the agent's wait never becomes a notification

Herdr reports that state only for the agents it recognises (Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, Antigravity, Cursor, OpenCode and more). Start the agent from inside a Herdr pane, not in a separate terminal. Also check that notifications are allowed for Firebrik Terminal in Android's settings. The waiting agent still shows under Needs attention on the app's home.

Sending a link to a computer opens it in that computer's own browser, so someone must be logged in to its desktop; a headless server cannot show it. Choose This phone instead: a localhost link is forwarded through the SSH connection to the computer that printed it.
